Two on-duty police officers were fatally shot on Tuesday night on the city’s South Side, when multiple shooters opened fire “indiscriminately” in the back yard of the neighborhood.
A massive manhunt had been launched across the South Side. Chicago Police Department Superintendent, Eddie Johnson said to press that both the officers were being treated and were expected to survive.
“Make no mistake,” a visibly angered Johnson said. “We will find the people responsible for this.”
At around 9 p.m., the officers were in plain clothes, while investigating on a follow up incident that occurred near 43rd Street and Ashland.
That is when “one or possibly two vehicles” pulled up and people inside the vehicle started shooting at the officers, who were sitting in a van.
One officer was shot in the hip and arm, the other in the back, police said. They were listed in serious condition.
Multiple weapons were recovered in the area, as well as a vehicle, which was possibly used in the shooting, Johnson said.
The identities of the officers have not been identified yet. Mayor Rahm Emanuel visited the officers and their families before leaving about 10:35 p.m.
“We’re praying for the officers and hoping for a full recovery, and we’re praying for all the officers continuing this investigation,” Ald. Pat Thompson (11th) said outside the hospital. “This act of senseless gun violence against shows we need to do something.”
The Fraternal Order of Police President, Kevin Graham also briefly spoke at the press conference.
“Our thought and prayers are with them tonight,” he said.
36-year-old Chris Villanueva said that he was walking back to his car in a mall parking lot on Ashland, when he heard about a dozen of rapid fire shots.
“I thought it was fireworks, maybe, but around here, you hear gunshots a lot,” he said. “Next thing, cops are everywhere.”
The incident drew a massive police response as detectives are investigating the entrance to the Old Union Stockyards.
