Tons of demonstrators calling for a conclusion to gun violence in Chicago moderately shut down a chief freeway in the city on Saturday, limiting traffic flow as they necessitated officials and members of the community do more to halt the carnage.

Primarily, hundreds of protesters trooped along two of the freeway's four northbound lanes observed by lines of police. Some carried crosses while others hit drums as they marched, chanting motto's including "Black Lives Matter!" Later, the marchers choked traffic flow on all four paths.

Illinois State Police said the agreement was stretched with organizers of the protest to let the demonstrators limited access to Interstate 94, known as the Dan Ryan Expressway, "to march peacefully for their cause." By mid-afternoon there were no apprehensions, police said.

Chicago leaders have long striven to bring down its high homicide amount. Even though homicides fell 16 percent earlier this year, the third largest United States city still ranked No. 1 in assassinations, with more than the collective total for New York and Los Angeles, the two major cities.

"This is not about just a march," one of the organizers of Saturday's protest, Father Michael Pfleger, told a news conference this week. "This is not about just an interruption of traffic. This is about the violence in the city of Chicago."

Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson and civil rights activist Jesse Jackson were among those who merged the walk, which was buoyed by the city’s mayor Rahm Emanuel, who said on Friday that it was vital to elevate awareness.

Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner said on Saturday that the protest had caused chaos, and he termed on Twitter for Emanuel to take "swift and decisive action" so that Chicago citizens could feel harmless.

Emanuel responded in a tweet: "It was a peaceful protest. Delete your account."
