Christmas weekend was miserable and disheartening in Chicago even by this year’s deplorably bad standards for gun violence.
Chicago Sun Times reported, according to police reports at least 41 people were shot and 11 were fatally injured between Friday evening and Sunday night.
James Gill 18 years old and Roy Gill 21 years old were two victims, who were killed when some unknown person came out of an alley and opened fire during a family party, Five other people were injured in that shooting alone, in which two of them are in critical condition.
Hours earlier than the incident, a man around age 40 was pronounced dead in South Side hospital after having been shot multiple times near the ‘Apostolic Labor of Love Church’, where a pool of blood could be seen on the front step.
Spoke person Jose Estrada for Chicago Police Department told to the New York Times that the number of homicides in the city rose to 745 this year, from last year’s 476 at this time of year, and marking that it was the first time since 1997 that there have been more than 700.
He also added, the total number of shooting victims across the country so far this year is 4,252 a raise of 47% from 2,884 in 2015. Most of the victims were men under the age of 30.
The number of murders in Chicago this year is on course to top that of Los Angeles and New York combined.
