Chance the Rapper encouraged attendees of the concert on Monday to campaign their right to vote before heading thousands of people to an early-voting site in Chicago.
Chance arranged a free concert in the city at Grant Park, following a “parade to the polls.” Chance and other entertainers had performed on Monday afternoon at Petrillo Music Shell. The event had been sponsored by his non-profit group “Social Works” had been geared toward millennial voters, who are crucial in recent elections.
The crowds of people broke through the downtown to Dearborn and Washington streets. Chicago police followed the group, but there was no reports of disturbances from the group.
Social media ad been flooded with images and video of the crowd that was led by Chance. Many people had been using the hashtag #StayWokeAndVote.
Chance went through the early-voting site and cast his ballot. CBS Chicago reported that he had voiced his support previously for Hillary Clinton.
Lines went long throughout on Monday. Officials said that anyone in line by 7 PM will be allowed to vote.
According to Illinois’ State Board of Elections, around 1.3 million people cast in-person the early ballots through Sunday, surpassing the turnout of previous presidential contests.
